Give Me My Mountain: Fearlessly Claiming God's Promises as Women

Yesterday’s sermon hit me like a thunderbolt: "Give Me My Mountain" from Joshua 14:10–12. Caleb, at 85 years young, did not shrink back from the giants he had faced 45 years earlier. He declared to Joshua, "Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive... So here I am today, eighty-five years old! ... Now give me this mountain that the Lord promised me that day." Caleb saw the mountains—literally and figuratively—but he claimed them fearlessly because God was with him.
As women, don't we know those mountains all too well? They are the towering challenges of juggling marriage and motherhood, caring for aging parents, building businesses from scratch, or thriving as professionals in male-dominated fields. Maybe your mountain is a strained relationship, a mountain of debt, or the ache of singleness after divorce. The world tells us to play it safe, scale down our dreams, or let fear paralyze us. But Caleb shows us another way: decide daily to cross your mountain.
Caleb's Secret: Faith Over Fear
Look closer at Caleb's story. The spies saw giants and grasshoppers in themselves (Numbers 13:33), but Caleb saw God's promises. He wholly followed the Lord (Joshua 14:14). At an age when most retire, he chose the fight. Why? Because his strength came "as his strength was then" (v.11)—empowered by the same God who never changes.
Fearlessly Female friends, what giants are you staring down? That promotion you doubt you are ready for? The courage to leave a toxic situation? The faith to launch that side hustle or ministry? Caleb did not wait for the ground to flatten. He charged ahead, trusting God's "Yes" from decades prior.
Crossing Your Mountain: Practical Steps for Fearless Women
Remember God's Promise: Joshua 14 reminds us God keeps His word. Journal the promises He's spoken over your life—through Scripture, prayer, or that quiet nudge in worship. Speak them out loud, like Caleb did.
Name Your Giants: Be specific. Is it exhaustion from caretaking? Fear of failure in business? Write them down, then declare, "These are my mountains, and with God, I will drive them out."
Step Out Daily: Caleb didn't conquer overnight. Start small—say yes to that networking event, forgive that hurt, or tithe through tight finances. Each step builds momentum.
Surround Yourself with Calebs: Find your Joshua tribe—women who spur you on. We're better together, fearlessly claiming territory.
I have been there, sisters. Post-divorce, my mountains felt insurmountable: rebuilding finances, rewriting my identity, stepping into authorship. But God whispered, "Give Me your mountain." Today, I'm stronger, wiser, and owning the promises He gave me.
Your Turn: Fearlessly Forward
What mountain is God calling you to claim?
Let's pray:
Lord, like Caleb, give us our mountains. Ignite our faith to see giants fall. Amen.
